How to protect against scammers – a new SoA guide for authors
2026 has seen a disturbing increase in the number of scams aimed at authors. Our clients have reported a broad range of schemes they have detected, of varying degrees of sophistication, and we're seeing a huge increase in fraudulent emails referencing our authors being sent to us as well.
The Society of Authors has published an excellent guide linked here which we urge you to read. The simple rule of thumb is that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Always check with trusted contacts if you receive an approach that looks suspicious. We urge healthy scepticism, and wariness of any unverified contact who is pressuring you to give information, share your work, give them money, or respond to their messages by a deadline.
If you're a Greyhound client you can always run things past your agent here to check if you're unsure about the authenticity or veracity of unsolicited communications.
